Before the Genital Wart removal treatment

Before undergoing laser treatment for genital warts, you will have a consultation that includes taking a sexual health history and assessing your warts. A chaperone will be available for the examination if you wish. If you have been using topical treatments for your warts, we recommend stopping them one week before your appointment. Prior to booking an appointment, we would also advise patients to consult their GPs or a sexual health clinic for guidance on routine sexual health screening.

During the Genital wart removal treatment

Laser treatment for genital warts is performed under local anesthesia to minimise discomfort. Once the area is numb, a focused laser beam is used to precisely target and remove the warts. The procedure typically takes just a few minutes, depending on the number and size of the warts being treated. After the procedure, the area may appear red or slightly swollen, which is a normal response.

After the treatment

Following laser treatment, you may experience redness, swelling, or mild discomfort in the treated area. This is normal and usually subsides within a few days. It’s important to keep the area clean and dry to promote healing and reduce the risk of infection. Avoid sexual activity until the skin has fully healed, which typically takes one to two weeks.

There is a small risk of recurrence, as the laser removes the warts but doesn’t eliminate the underlying HPV infection. However, in our experience, this happens very rarely.

While both are effective treatments for genital warts, the advantage of laser therapy is its precision, often requiring only one treatment. In contrast, cryotherapy can sometimes damage surrounding tissue and usually requires multiple treatments.
