spider veins / red veins / vascular lesions removal with ipl

Some vascular lesions are visible at birth, whilst others are acquired as a person ages such as spider veins or thread veins on the face. Both of these may be treated using laser therapy. In accordance with the principle of selective photothermolysis, blood vessels in these lesions can be selectively heated and destroyed without damaging surrounding, healthy tissue.

At Perfect Image Consultants IPL (Intense Pulse Light) is used to treat superficial spider veins, red veins, and vascular lesions. The light is absorbed by the red pigment (hemoglobin) in the lesions and destroys it. Over the next few days, your own immune mechanism helps to clear this pigment.

The following vascular lesions on the skin can be treated with IPL:

  • Port-wine stains
  • Haemangioma
  • Superficial telangiectasias
  • Rosacea, erythema of rosacea
  • Angiomas and spider angiomas
  • Spider veins
  • Thread Veins

IPL is contraindicated if you have tanned or dark skin and is not suitable for the treatment of larger veins.

what to expect

During the treatment

A cool gel will be applied to the treatment areas and your eyes will be covered. The practitioner will pre-set the parameters for the session specific to your requirements and begin. The IPL applicator will be applied to this area of cooled skin and a short pulse of light of the appropriate wavelength released. The treatment may feel like the flick of an elastic band on the skin.

After the treatment

Slight soreness and redness, similar to mild sunburn, maybe felt soon after the treatment and will disappear after a few hours. Blisters and darkening/lightening of the skin are rarely seen.

The pigmented areas treated may darken before they fade away. Some are seen to flake before disappearing either partially or completely. Between 1-4 treatments, at 4-week intervals, may be necessary.

frequently asked questions

How does IPl work

By exposing a pigmented lesion to short pulses of visible light, the temperature in the highly concentrated melanin can be raised sharply enough to shatter the cells containing the melanin. The body then replaces these cells with new cells generated by the surrounding untreated area.

Why should I have IPL?

If you have thread veins or spider veins on your face, particularly your cheeks and nose area, IPL treatment could be the option for you. This treatment reduces the appearance of thread veins and gives a clearer face,  rather than having pinkish-red cheeks or nose. Not only does IPL get rid of the spider veins on your face, but many patients say it gives their skin an extra glow.

Will the thread veins or spider veins come back after IPL treatment?”

IPL treatment is not a one-off treatment. You will need to come in regularly to have this treatment. While the appearance of the thread veins/spider veins will reduce, it cannot be guaranteed that they will completely disappear.

How long between IPL sessions?

The number of sessions and how frequently you will need this IPL treatment will vary from person to person and will be decided on at your consultation.
