Frequently asked questions

Pigment Removal with IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) delivers gentle bursts of light that target areas of excess pigment in the skin. The light is absorbed by the melanin, breaking it down into tiny fragments that are naturally removed by your body over time. This gradually reduces the appearance of pigmentation, revealing clearer, brighter skin.

Most clients need 4 to 8 sessions for best results, spaced around 4 weeks apart. Since pigmentation often sits in different layers of the skin, multiple treatments are required to target it effectively. We’ll assess your skin during consultation and tailor the plan to your specific needs.

Pigment Removal with IPL is ideal for treating sun damage, freckles, age spots, and certain types of melasma or post-inflammatory pigmentation. It works best on superficial pigmentation and is not suitable for active acne or deep scarring.

IPL is safest and most effective on light to medium skin tones (Fitzpatrick I–IV), especially where there is a good contrast between pigmentation and surrounding skin. If you have a darker skin tone, we’ll assess your suitability carefully to reduce the risk of pigmentation changes.

Most people describe IPL as a quick, light snap on the skin—similar to an elastic band flick. It’s generally well tolerated, though some areas may feel more sensitive. After treatment, you may experience mild redness or warmth that usually fades within 24–48 hours.

Results from Pigment Removal with IPL can last 6 months to a year or longer, especially with good skincare and regular use of SPF. New pigmentation may form over time with sun exposure or hormonal changes, so we often recommend maintenance sessions once or twice a year.

Side effects are usually minimal—temporary redness, slight swelling, or mild darkening of the treated spots before they flake away. We’ll provide full aftercare advice, including avoiding sun exposure, using SPF 30+ daily, and keeping the area cool and moisturised. IPL may not be suitable during pregnancy or if you’ve recently used certain medications like Roaccutane.
