What are lipomas?

Many people have lumps and bump on their bodies. These bumps are called Lipomas.

Lipomas are a collection of fat cells which come together to form a fatty lump under the skin. These lumps of fat are benign and non-cancerous.  In the majority of cases, they are not painful or harmful. Lipomas can form anywhere on the body.

Can Lipomas be removed?

In most cases lipomas can be easily removed. Some lipomas, if large or deep, can be more challenging to excise. Lipoma removal is generally considered to be a cosmetic procedure, therefore your GP might not offer you lipoma removal on the NHS. However, we recommend all our patients visit their GP prior to a consultation with us to confirm that the lump is a lipoma and that it cannot be removed on the NHS.

Before the Lipoma removal treatment

Once you have been to your GP, and they have agreed that the lipoma can be removed privately, we will see you for a consultation and assess you.

Your doctor will assess your areas of concern and advise whether further investigation is required. If so, the necessary arrangements will be made and occasionally patients are referred in order to confirm that there are no contraindications.

Once you and the doctor have decided on the lipoma removal treatment there will be an opportunity to discuss your skin care after lipoma removal. These measures will help to reduce any scarring

During the treatment

Your doctor will mark the lesion(s) to be removed and the procedure will begin. This will be excision under local anaesthetic and will take approximately an hour from start to finish.

After the treatment

After the procedure you may go home and rest. Please do not engage in any physical activity until the practitioner has said it is safe to do so full stop

It is important to note, that there may be some scarring and stitches will be necessary. You will have need to book in for a follow up appointment to have them removed.
