pigment removal with ipl

Pigmented lesions are extremely common, affecting almost everybody. Some are caused by sun exposure or ageing, whilst others are congenital. Regardless of the cause, or whether the pigmented lesions are flat or raised, they are simply areas on the skin where there is a higher concentration of melanin.

At Perfect Image Consultants we use IPL (Intense Pulse Light) laser technology to treat :

  • Age Spots
  • Freckles
  • Birthmarks

It is contraindicated in individuals with tanned and dark skin.

what to expect

During the treatment

A cool gel will be applied to the treatment areas and your eyes will be covered. The practitioner will pre-set the parameters for the session specific to your requirements and begin. The IPL applicator will be applied to this area of cooled skin and a short pulse of light of the appropriate wavelength released. The treatment may feel like the flick of an elastic band on the skin.

After the treatment

Soon after the treatment you may experience slight soreness and redness, similar to mild sunburn, which will disappear after a few hours. Blisters and darkening/lightening of the skin are rarely seen.

The pigmented areas treated may darken before they fade away. Some are seen to flake before disappearing either partially or completely. You may require between one and four treatments, at four week intervals.

frequently asked questions

How it does it works?

The IPL laser is applied to the lesion in short pulses, increasing the temperature of the melanin containing cells, causing them to disperse. The body then replaces these cells with new cells generated by the surrounding, untreated tissue.
