Hyperhidrosis
Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating, generally causing sweaty palms and armpits), can be effectively reduced with botulinum toxin injections. It is most commonly used under the armpits but can also be used to treat sweaty palms, face and even feet. Whilst sweating, or perspiring, is a completely normal and natural body function, for those suffering from hyperhidrosis, the excessive sweating can cause real problems in daily life including embarrassment and anxiety. This anxiety about sweating can then cause, or worsen, the sweating episode. It is not caused as a result of the body overhearing, which is why most of us sweat and can occur in the coldest of temperatures. It can come on suddenly, for no particular reason, making it difficult for sufferers to manage the condition. Hyperhidrosis is not serious in a medical context, but the excessive sweating can cause the skin to turn white or it can become cracked or wrinkled. This, in turn, can lead to inflammation and redness in the affected areas. In many cases, there is no clear cause, but it may be due to issues with the part of the nervous system that control sweating and it is not a condition that will get better. This is why many sufferers turn to the botulinum toxin injections.
The botulinum toxin injections into the affected areas reduce the production of sweat by the sweat glands by basically paralyzing the nerves that would usually signal to these sweat glands. Botulinum toxin is safe and effective in treating hyperhidrosis, but it is a prescription only, non-surgical treatment that will be carried out by one of our fully qualified doctors or nurses.
what to expect
During the treatment
The treatment areas will be agreed between you and your practitioner and marked. There is generally no need to apply topical anaesthesia before the treatment.
Our medical staff will use a very fine needle to inject the botulinum toxin just below the skin’s surface. You will be given several injections into the area being treated. There is very little discomfort and the entire treatment takes about 30 minutes. If excessive sweating in the arm pit area is being treated, then we ask that you shave your armpits on the day of your treatment.
After the treatment
There is no recovery time and you would expect to note an improvement after 7-10 days and total dryness should be achieved after two weeks. The results usually last 6-8 months, maybe longer, but this varies from person to person. The effects may not last as long on the hands and feet.
Patients are delighted not only with the reduction in sweating but also with the reduction in the odours associated with excessive sweating. If you suffer from hyperhidrosis, we feel that this is a treatment that will genuinely, and dramatically, improve your day to day life. No more sweaty palms, sweaty armpits or sweaty feet, whatever the weather!!
