Breast reduction for males
Gynaecomastia is a condition where firm breast tissue is found in males. It originates from the Greek work ‘female like breasts’ It can be one or both sided.
There are a number of medical conditions that cause this condition. So it is important that you see your General Practitioner to rule these out.
They include:
- Klinefelter’s syndrome
- Some prescription drugs, also anabolic steroids used by body builders
- Hormone imbalances
- Tumour of the testicles or pituitary gland
- Breast cancer
- Liver disease especially alcoholic cirrhosis
What anaesthesia will be used?
Generally performed under local anaesthesia.In some cases General anaesthesia may be needed.
How is the surgical procedure performed?
- It will take place in the state of the art theatre within our clinic.
- It usually takes about 1 ½ to 2 hours.
- The technique used will depend on the amount of excess skin.
- Liposuction is the treatment of choice when there is not much excess skin.
- For this several small incisions are made in the armpit or areola (skin over the nipple region).
- A thin metal rod or canula attached to a vacuum pump is inserted and fatty tissue is sucked out.
- A small drain is left in for a day or two.
What is the recovery time?
Most patients can resume normal routine activities in a day or two.But should plan to re-start work in 3-7 days.
What are the risks?
- Chest will be tender and swollen after the procedure.
- Swelling and bruising is common and may take 1-2 weeks to disappear.
- Rarely bleeding and infection can occur.
- Very rarely anaesthetic reactions can occur.
- Scars gradually fade over time.
